Proposed Electric Rate Increase

Morrisville Water & Light is asking for a 16.33% increase in electric rates. We followed state rules for this request, but in the past, we often received lower approvals. For example, last year, we asked for an 11.25% increase but were approved for only 5.16%.

If the increase is approved, it could start 45 days after filing. If the PUC lowers the amount, we will credit customers for the difference. We expect to hear back from the PUC by summer 2025.

We know any rate increase is tough for customers. Our last increase was in 2023, the first in 13 years. If the full 2024 increase is approved, it would mean a total of 21.49% over 15 years, or about 1.5% each year. We plan to keep future increases smaller.

The need for this rate increase comes from several factors, including the cost of buying power, transmission fees, insurance, property tax, and equipment wear and tear. Despite the increase, we expect to stay one of the more affordable utilities in Vermont.
